Rutgers may not be Hogwarts, but we still have a place for all die-hard Harry Potter fans. Muggle Mayhem, the Rutger’s chapter of the Harry Potter Association, is a place for Harry Potter lovers, wizard-wannabees, and everyday muggles to get together and bond about J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world. But, believe it or not, Muggle Mayhem is SO much more than a place for fans to unite; it’s an internationally recognized community service organization. Yup, that’s right – the Harry Potter Association serves thousands of charitable causes around the whole world.
As said best by Sky Bolkin, Muggle Mayhem’s treasurer:
Harry Potter is the frame, but community service is the picture”
You may be wondering: how exactly do Harry Potter and community service relate? I asked the same thing, but after talking some more with Sky, it all made sense. As she told me, EVERYTHING relates to Harry Potter. Therefore, all the service that Muggle Mayhem does is in one way or another applicable to Harry Potter. For example, take a look at the house elves and relate them to victims of abuse. We see the same abusive dynamic relationship and the pressing need to help them. Other forms of service that the organization participates in include: volunteering in soup kitchens, visiting hospitals, and cleaning highways.
“We all want to make the world a better place, and our club lets people unite through their love for Harry Potter and do just that.”
One of the most widely recognized service programs which Muggle Mayhem operates is Accio Books! Accio Books is Harry Potter Alliance’s annual book drive. Since 2009, Harry Potter fans around the world have donated more than 200,000 books to underprivileged and under-served readers. One might say that the Harry Potter Association wouldn’t be doing justice if it didn’t give all of society the means to read and enjoy the Harry Potter series as well as thousands of other beloved novels!
As you can see, Muggle Mayhem is doing great things, and what’s most impressive is that the organization was founded only last year! Since its recent creation, Muggle Mayhem has expanded and transformed enormously. A group which began with little over five members, is now proud to have close to 30 enthusiastic members. With so many new members, Muggle Mayhem is excited to participate in a variety of different service events and provide eager volunteers to countless important causes.
It seems that no one is more excited about Muggle Mayhem’s expansion than Sky, Joe (the president), and Shikha (the VP). Sky, Joe, and Shikha joined Muggle Mayhem when it was first created and are now proud to return as the club’s E-Board members. All three stated how amazed they were by the huge turn-out at their first meeting. In fact, Sky commented that everyone could barely fit in one room!
This year Joe, Shikha, and Sky have high hopes for Muggle Mayhem and are optimistic about its development. They are already planning many fun events (which can’t be revealed just yet!) and look forward to collaborating with other student organizations, such as the Board Game Club and the Quidditch Team of course. Make sure to keep your eyes open for all of these magical events!
Muggle Mayhem officially meets every other Monday but holds many service events throughout the semester. Their next meeting will be held Monday, October 19th at 9:15 PM in the Rutgers Student Center, Room 413 (Cap and Skull Room). Everyone is welcome and all new members will be sorted into a House (of your choosing), so you’re guaranteed to feel right at home in no time!
Last but not least, don’t worry about fitting in, because Muggle Mayhem has an extremely diverse group with students from all grades and from all different backgrounds. There’s a place for everyone. If you don’t believe me, take it from the word of a new member:
“I knew this was the right club for me.”
