While many students may mistake the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum for an ordinary academic building, it is, in fact, one of the largest and most distinguished university-based museums in the nation. In addition to exhibiting over 60,000 diverse, world-class art installations, it offers special programs such as lectures, concerts, workshops, and gallery tours to visitors. In other words, the Zimmerli is not your average museum.
If you didn’t know it was a museum,
it would be easy to pass by this statue, stop for a moment to admire it, and continue walking, unaware that the building’s interior is filled with wonders just like this one.
If you had, however, stopped to take a peek inside, you would have been blown away by the incredible atmosphere within. Immediately, you are confronted with stunning pieces including the one below.
After looking around, you would notice many doorways and flights of stairs leading to different tempting exhibitions. The possibilities for exploration are endless and each option offers a different exciting world. Believe me, it doesn’t matter which exhibition you choose to view because all of them are impressive.
Here are some of the sights you’ll see as you venture through the museum:
With artwork all around you, enveloping you in an aesthetic embrace, you begin to feel like part of the exhibition. The Zimmerli Museum surrounds you with paintings, sculptures, models, and artifacts that are close enough to touch (which of course you never do, because touching the works is prohibited). You slowly forget that you are a visitor within a museum and feel as if you’re walking through a dream.
As you continue walking through the museum, you continue to feel as if you’re traveling through vastly different worlds. The atmosphere and aura which reverberates throughout the rooms changes with the featured art surrounding you.
While these pictures do not do the exhibitions justice, they can at least give you a sense of what you’ll find within the museum. Keep in mind that these pictures only portray a tiny fraction of the countless exhibitions and art works that the Zimmerli contains. Realistically, seeing everything in the museum would require a whole day, if not more. However, don’t let this intimidate you! This simply means that you will never run out of things to see; every trip you take to the Zimmerli will be a whole new experience.
What’s more, admission to the Zimmerli Art Museum is FREE! It doesn’t matter who you are or when you come, admission is free for everyone. So spend an hour or even a spare 15 minutes in the museum without a care about the cost. Don’t miss the chance to see world-class art right around the corner from you!
The Zimmerli is open:
