Alexandra Kelly is more than just your average student. As a senior at Rutgers University studying towards a communications major and music minor, Alexandra aspires to be a famous singer and songwriter. Using her experience at the University, Alexandra hopes to break into the music industry after graduation.
“I’ve seriously been singing ever since I could talk,” says Alexandra, who grew up in a relatively artistic family. Her parents fostered a welcoming and an encouraging environment which inspired her creativity. “My parents raised my sister and I to love all art, music included.”
As an active member of the Rutgers community, Alexandra is part of two student-run theatre groups: Cabaret Theatre and The Livingston Theatre Company. Being a part of these organizations gives her a chance to share similar interests with her peers and create artistic bonds.
“Rutgers has helped me grow as an artist as well as a person,” Alexandra explains. “I had a chance to meet people who accepted me instantly.”
With the hope to inspire others and connect with people’s thoughts and emotions, Alexandra hopes to reach out to people to let them know that other people share similar experiences and that they are not alone.
“If you’ve ever had your heart broken, I have written a song about it. If you’ve ever fallen in love, I have written a song about it. My music emulates my life,” Alexandra says. “My music is for everyone.”
Alexandra writes her own lyrics for her songs and she has recently released two studio albums and a music video for a track called “Jump” on her newest album.
“There might also be a second music video in the works for the next single off of the album called ‘It’s Complicated’,” she reveals.
Ever since she was little, Alexandra had a dream to sing, but along with that came the aspiration to be educated and to attend college to earn a degree.
“Rutgers has helped me with both paths,” says Alexandra. “I can’t imagine doing anything other than music with my life, and I can’t imagine being at any school other than Rutgers.”
Working with the Grammy Foundation in Los Angeles and the Universal Music Publishing Group in Nashville, Tennessee, has given her the chance to perform and record with other musicians and producers.
As she hopes to travel the world and share her music with many people, Alexandra also wants to build closer relationships with record companies. “I truly want to make my music career,” she says. “It’s horrible to say that in ten years I want to be famous, but in ten years…I want to be famous!”
